From Russia without love: an overview of russian citizenship renunciation

Throughout this year, our office has been receiving a considerable number of calls from Russian citizens trying to renounce their citizenship. Given the instability with consular services and anything Russia-related these days, the process can be daunting and discouraging for many. Luckily, with our contacts and expertise, you can rest assured that we will take charge of the process and help you renounce your citizenship as quickly as possible.

If you decide to give up your Russian citizenship, you must bear in mind that the process depends on your individual circumstances. If you have both your Russian internal and external passports and are registered at an address in Russia, you must first unregister from that address. You would normally be required to travel to Russia to do that, but we have an agent in Moscow who would be able to take care of that process for you. He will also be able to obtain a tax clearance certificate mandatory for relinquishing Russian citizenship.

If one or both of your Russian passports are missing, we recommend contacting us to discuss your individual situation.

Once we obtain a notice confirming you are no longer permanently registered in Russia as well as your tax clearance certificate, we would be able to schedule an appointment for you to come into the Russian Consulate to formally relinquish your citizenship. If you try to schedule an appointment on your own, you would not be able to find any appointments in the next few months, but our consular contacts enable us to expedite the process, meaning that we can normally get you a slot in about a week or two.

Apart from the two documents from Russia, you would also need to present a document confirming your new citizenship (e.g. your US passport), as well as any name change document if there is a spelling difference in your name across different passports. All these documents would need to be duly legalized and translated according to consular standards. We have decades of experience dealing with the consulate and know all the ins-and-outs of the process, so if you use our services, we will prepare, legalize, and translate all the documents necessary for your citizenship renunciation appointment.

Call us today at (212) 233-7061 or e-mail us at info@apostille.us if you would like to renounce your Russian citizenship. We will tailor our service to your unique situation to help you give up your citizenship as quickly and effortlessly as possible.
